Diamond

East of US-36 2.5 miles
Six miles south of Eureka.

In the 1870s rich silver deposits were discovered in the area around Diamond. The town grew to have stores, hotels, saloons, a post office, a boot makers shop, and a newspaper. The Tintic Smelter was built in 1871 and the Miller Mill was built in 1873. The city was abandoned because the silver mines hit water and flooded when they reached about 300 feet of depth. Today there is not much left at Diamond but some tailings dumps, abandoned mine shafts and a forlorn little cemetery.

These pictures were taken in July of 2004.
